More than 60,000 people have fled the Sudanese city of El-Fasher after it was seized by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over the weekend, according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR).

The RSF takeover followed 18 months of siege, overcrowding, and starvation, and has reportedly been accompanied by mass killings and other crimes against humanity.

UNHCR spokesperson Eujin Byun told the BBC that thousands of people have been escaping toward the nearby village of Tawila, about 80km (50 miles) west of El-Fasher, in recent days.

Those arriving shared harrowing accounts of violence, including rape and other abuses, while aid workers struggle to provide enough shelter, food, and basic supplies for the displaced.
