The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who gave an interview to the famous Washington Post, said that there are people close to President Donald Trump who want to and there are efforts underway in the United States officially recognize Somaliland.
“We have never had good relations with the United States. We don’t know what the Trump administration will come up with, but we don’t expect anything bad. There are people close to Trump who want to recognize Somaliland,” said President Hassan Sheikh.
He added that the Somali government strongly opposes the recognition of Somaliland. Explaining the history of Somalia and Somaliland, he said that Somaliland was a protectorate of the British, while Somalia was a colony of Italy, but they united in 1960 under the name of the Somali Republic.
On the other hand, President Hassan Sheikh said that the United States played an important role in supporting Somalia, especially in the fight against Al-Shabaab.
Also the president said AMISOM forces and other international friends are the ones who helped to ensure security and aim of Somalia is to have a national army in the future that can fully secure the country, so that we do not need foreign troops. But until we achieve that, we need the support of the world.
The President of Somalia stressed that the stability of Somalia is in the interest of the international community. “Al-Shabab is a branch of Al-Qaeda, and they have international goals. Our war is controlling the expansion of their network in Europe and the United States,” he said.
