Credible sources have revealed a political scandal shaking the image of the Federal Government of Somalia, following reports that members of an official delegation sent to Switzerland sought asylum in European countries instead of returning home.

The delegation, reportedly appointed to represent the Somali government, traveled to Switzerland on an official mission. However, only four (4) individuals are confirmed to have returned to Somalia, while the rest applied for asylum, choosing to remain in Europe and abandon their official duties.

Allegations of Government-Issued Visa Sales

Independent sources indicate that the trip may have been manipulated through the illegal sale of government visas, allowing unauthorized individuals to travel under the guise of official representation. These reports suggest that national opportunities meant for state interests were traded for personal gain, with visas being sold to individuals seeking to reach Europe.

This incident has seriously undermined the credibility of the Somali government’s handling of official foreign trips and raised doubts about the integrity of visa approvals and diplomatic representation.

State-Linked Migration and Youth Lost at Sea

Meanwhile, growing concerns remain over the role of Somali authorities in facilitating risky migration routes through unofficial channels. Reports over recent months have pointed to hundreds of Somali youths being put on dangerous boats in attempts to reach Europe, with some voyages allegedly carried out with indirect involvement or knowledge of state actors.

These journeys have resulted in the deaths and disappearances of countless young Somalis across the waters between Libya, Algeria, and Spain, with many families left without answers or justice.

The incident in Switzerland, coupled with the broader migration crisis, reveals a deepening trust deficit in how the Somali government manages its responsibilities. The misuse of official titles for private migration and the apparent disregard for the safety of its citizens are stark indicators of governance challenges.

In the end, the greatest victims are ordinary Somali citizens — whose futures are traded away, and whose lives are endangered by policies or practices lacking transparency and accountability.
