A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 magnitude struck the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, killing at least 20 people and injuring around 150 others, according to local officials.
The earthquake struck near Mazar-e-Sharif, one of the largest cities in Afghanistan, home to around 500,000 people, in the early hours of Monday, around 01:00 local time.
Authorities said rescuers managed to pull several survivors from beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings, where many had been trapped and at risk of death.
Afghanistan has faced a series of devastating earthquakes in recent months, which have killed hundreds and injured thousands more. Several affected regions remain in ruins, with many residents still unable to return home.
Officials from the Taliban-led government said they plan to expand emergency response teams to provide greater assistance to those affected by earthquakes, storms, and other natural disasters.
