Patricia Kaliati, Secretary General of the UTM party a leading member of Malawi’s opposition has been accused of plotting the assassination of the country’s president, Lazarus Chakwera,and was arrested last week on charges of “meeting with other people to commit a serious crime.”
On Monday, the 57-year-old woman appeared before the court in the capital of Malawi, but she did not speak.
A few details about the plan that she is said to have plotted have been briefly revealed, and various members of the opposition say that the allegations related to Kaliati are political.
UTM supporters gathered in front of the court, chanting anti-government songs before the hearing, according to the AFP news agency.
