Banisa, Mandera – May 2025 – Senior leaders from Mandera County have paid a condolence and peace-building visit to Banisa town following a deadly attack in Murutho earlier this week, in which 12 civilians were killed.
The attack, one of the deadliest in the region this year, shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about security in the area. Most of the victims were pastoralists and innocent civilians, targeted in a surprise assault by armed assailants.
Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif, who led the delegation, expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory acts that could worsen tensions.
He emphasized the county government’s commitment to enhancing security and facilitating intercommunity dialogue to prevent future violence. The governor also assured the public that justice would be pursued, and those responsible for the killings would be held accountable.
Security forces have since increased patrols and operations in Murutho and surrounding areas as investigations continue to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The leaders’ visit to Banisa is seen as a vital gesture of solidarity with the affected communities, and it is hoped that their efforts will pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region.
