Turkish forces have, for the first time, directly taken part in combat operations against Al-Shabaab inside Somalia, fighting alongside the Somali National Army to repel an attack in the Middle Shabelle region.

The fighting, which lasted nearly three hours, took place in the Jabad Godane area of Warsheikh district. The location is of strategic importance, as Turkey is planning to establish a satellite launch facility in the area.

Approximately ten Turkish soldiers, equipped with armored vehicles and advanced weaponry, provided critical support to Somali forces during the operation. Local residents and security officials reported that Al-Shabaab fighters were forced to retreat toward the outskirts of Hawadley.

The incident highlights the deepening security cooperation between Somalia and Turkey. Ankara has previously provided training, equipment, and technical assistance to Somali forces, and this direct engagement signals Turkey’s expanding role in counterterrorism efforts and in securing strategic infrastructure, including the planned satellite launch site.
