Opposition politicians to the Somali federal government have begun private meetings in Mogadishu this morning, which are a prelude to a larger conference to be held in Mogadishu next week.

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Ministers Hassan Ali Kheyre and Cumar Abdi Rashid and other members arrived at the Ma’alin Nur headquarters this morning, where they were invited.

These meetings are seen as a prelude to a larger conference expected to be held this week by opposition politicians in the capital, to discuss the political situation in the country.

The expected conference will be another opportunity for the opposition to agree on a unified position, with ongoing diplomatic efforts and low-level meetings led by the country’s former leaders.

It is expected that political gatherings will increase in the coming days, as Mogadishu has once again become the center of conflicting political views in the country.
