The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, alongside the President of Hirshabeelle State and the Mayor of Banadir Region, has officially laid the foundation stone for the construction of the ‘New Mogadishu International Airport’ in Haabaay area, Warsheekh District, Middle Shabelle region.
This ambitious project is set to become the largest airport in Somalia, and is expected to play a vital role in boosting the country’s air transport infrastructure, enhancing international connectivity, and driving economic development.
President Hassan Sheikh stated during the ceremony:
“This is a historic day. This airport will not only serve Mogadishu but will also transform Somalia’s aviation and logistics sector for generations to come.”
The airport will feature modern terminals, expanded runways capable of handling large international aircraft, and state-of-the-art cargo and passenger facilities. It is envisioned as a strategic hub for both regional and global air travel.
The project is part of the government’s broader plan to improve national infrastructure, attract foreign investment, and create jobs for Somali citizens.
