Garissa, Kenya – May 9, 2025

Reported by: RNN Somali TV

The Special Operations Group (SOG), Kenya’s elite counterterrorism unit, conducted a pre-dawn operation in the Dadaab–Hagadera area of Garissa County, killing an Al-Shabaab operative and seizing a cache of weapons.

The operation was launched following credible intelligence provided by local residents, indicating that Al-Shabaab militants were attempting to plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the strategic road connecting Dadaab and Hagadera. Acting swiftly, SOG forces engaged the suspects in a targeted assault that led to the neutralization of one militant and injuries to three others.

Security sources confirmed that the forces recovered a significant amount of weaponry at the scene, including:

• One PKM heavy machine gun

• IED-making materials

• Ammunition and other military equipment

According to a senior SOG officer, the mission is part of a broader campaign aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab networks operating near the Kenya–Somalia border. The officer also praised the role of local communities in sharing vital intelligence that helped avert a potential tragedy.

Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining security in the region and emphasized that the hunt for other members of the militant cell is ongoing.
