The President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, paid a visit today to an Ethiopian hospital in Addis Ababa, where several Puntland soldiers injured in recent clashes with the ISIS-linked group in the Bari region are receiving medical treatment.

President Deni was accompanied by a high-ranking Ethiopian official, and the visit focused on inspecting the health conditions of the injured troops. Puntland had earlier sent the soldiers abroad for advanced medical care following injuries sustained during anti-terror operations.

Sources indicate that President Deni has been on an extended foreign trip. He recently arrived from Kenya, having previously spent several weeks in the United Arab Emirates, where he reportedly attended to undisclosed matters. Addis Ababa marks the latest stop in his regional tour.

The visit to wounded soldiers highlights the Puntland administration’s direct support for its armed forces engaged in combat with extremist groups, particularly ISIS, which has carried out attacks in the Cal Madow mountain ranges and surrounding areas.

For several years, the Puntland government has been actively fighting ISIS-linked militants in remote areas of northeastern Somalia. Special forces have been deployed in regular operations targeting extremist hideouts. Due to the intensity of these operations, injured troops are sometimes flown abroad for better medical care.
