Djibouti’s President, Ismail Omar Guelleh, has strongly criticized the role of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Horn of Africa, describing it as deeply undermining the stability of the region.

The President’s statement came after an interview he gave to Radio France International, where he clearly expressed Djibouti’s concerns over the growing influence of the Emirates in the region.

“The Emirates are deeply undermining the region,” he said.

He specifically noted that Djibouti had previously rejected an official request from the Emirates to establish a military base in Djibouti.
Guelleh also noted that “there is no investment that is not accompanied by military interests,” noting that this poses a threat to the stability and sovereignty of African countries.

The governments of the United Arab Emirates and Djibouti have not been on good terms for some time after Djibouti expelled DP World, which had invested in Djibouti Ports.
