The Somali government has repatriated 145 citizens who were stranded in Libya.

The voluntary repatriation program reportedly saw 37 of the people returned to Hargeisa, the capital of the self-declared republic of Somaliland, while the rest were dropped off at Mogadishu airport.

Thousands of young Somalis use Libya as a transit point to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe, but many end up stranded in the North African country, posing as “refugees”.

The voluntary repatriation program is being facilitated by the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Somalia has repatriated over 1000 migrant from Libya since 2022 with EU and IOM support.
