Latest results from Saturday’s presidential election in Sri Lanka show that leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake is in the lead.

Dissanayake won 53 percent of the votes counted so far, the electoral commission announced on Sunday. In second place is opposition leader Sajith Premadasa with 22%, while in third place is President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

If Anura Kumara wins, he will have a tough job, first of all, to improve the stagnant economy of the South Asian country, which has not yet recovered from the economic crisis that has plagued the country for the past 10 years.

This election is the first to be held in the country since the collapse of Sri Lanka’s economic system in 2022 when the country lost its foreign exchange, resulting in people not being able to buy basic necessities life like gas, medicine and food.
