Germany’s leader of conservative party, Friedrich Merz, won a narrow victory in the country’s national elections on Sunday, but the far-right German Alternative Party won its biggest victory since World War II.

The Incumbent leader Olaf Scholz admitted that his centre-left Social Democrats withdrew from the election after a resolution. Last night’s preliminary results showed that the current ruling party dropped to third place.

Forecasts and preliminary results showed that the conservative coalition CDU/CSU got 28.5%, followed by the anti-immigrant AfD, which got 20.5%. While the ruling Social Democrats got 16% of the vote.

It is the lowest result of this German party in the elections since the end of the Second World War, when it received 20.5% of votes.

Germany is the most populous country in the European Union and one of the most powerful countries in the NATO Alliance, which has a population of 84 million and is also the country with the best economy in the European Union.
