General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, has officially announced that he will not run in the country’s 2026 presidential elections. This decision comes after years of speculation regarding his potential candidacy, with many believing he was being groomed to succeed his father, who has ruled Uganda for nearly four decades.

In a public statement, Muhoozi emphasized his commitment to the military, describing the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) as his priority. He declared that he had received divine inspiration to focus on his duties as Chief of Defence Forces rather than pursue political ambitions. Muhoozi also voiced support for his father, endorsing President Museveni for another term in office.

His decision to step back from the 2026 race has significant implications for Uganda’s political future. It temporarily halts the speculation around a potential family succession and reduces tension within the Museveni family, especially following public disputes with his brother-in-law, Odrek Rwabwogo. Despite this move, many believe that Muhoozi’s political career is far from over, and he may still play a major role in Uganda’s leadership in the future.

In the coming years, Muhoozi’s focus will remain on leading the military, solidifying his influence within the armed forces while avoiding direct political challenges. His step back from the race has allowed President Museveni to further secure his position as the dominant figure in Uganda’s politics.
