There are reports that a ship named Hellas Aphrodite, which is registered in the island of Malta and was transporting fuel to South Africa, was attacked by Somali pirates.
Reports say that a group of Somali pirates who seized the ship yesterday disembarked the ship after the crew hid in the safe rooms in the areas designed to protect the crew when there are dangers such as pirate attacks.
The attackers were said to have had difficulty in taking control of the ship, while the EU naval mission (Atalanta) was closely monitoring the incident.
Pirate groups opened fire on the modern doors, and one of the group members was injured. In the end, they disembarked from the oil ship, according to reports written about the incident.
Maritime security experts have warned that such attacks could rekindle security threats that could affect commercial vessels and the region’s economy, calling for stronger surveillance and monitoring of Somalia’s waters.
