The African Union has officially appointed former Prime Minister of Somalia and former President of Puntland, Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali (Gaas), as the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission to South Sudan.
The appointment was announced in an official statement from the Office of the AU Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, who praised Dr. Gaas for his extensive experience in politics, diplomacy, and conflict resolution, calling him a strong fit for this critical role.
Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat stated:
“Dr. Abdiweli Gaas is a seasoned leader, and we are confident he will contribute significantly to the peace and stabilization efforts in South Sudan.”
In this new role, Dr. Gaas will be tasked with facilitating political dialogue, monitoring the security situation, and supporting the ongoing peace process in South Sudan — a country that has faced prolonged conflict and instability.
Dr. Gaas previously worked with international organizations and universities before serving as Somalia’s Prime Minister from 2011 to 2012 and as President of Puntland from 2014 to 2019.
His appointment has been widely welcomed in Somalia and is seen as a diplomatic win for the country on the international stage.
