Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the 55 years old of the people’s liberation front ,was declared winner with nearly 1.3 million more votes than his nearest rival sajith premadasa that took place in Sri Lanka on Saturday, it was announced on Sunday by the electoral commission.
The people of Sri Lanka pushed aside the former politicians who were the face of the recent governments, who saw that the South Asian country was pushed into the worst financial crisis.
Dissanayake, who has been very pro-working class and opposed to popular politicians, has received overwhelming support from the youth which hastened his victory in the election.
He defeated opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and outgoing president Ranil Wickremesinghe, who took office two years ago after Sri Lanka’s deep economic crisis.
He received almost 6 million votes from the votes cast as announced by the Election Commission. The main task ahead is to stabilize Sri Lanka’s still-recovered economy.
