The Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, has announced the successful completion of a major oil and gas exploration mission in Somali territorial waters by the research vessel Oruç Reis.

According to a statement shared on the Minister’s social media, the Oruç Reis began its survey on October 25, 2024, and concluded its operations after 234 days at sea. The ship conducted seismic exploration across three blocks, collecting 3D seismic data covering an area of 4,464 square kilometers.

Minister Bayraktar noted that the data gathered will play a vital role in assessing Somalia’s potential oil and gas reserves. He further confirmed that the Oruç Reis is scheduled to dock at Mogadishu Port on June 15, 2025, before returning to Turkey.

This marks a significant milestone in the deepening energy cooperation between Turkey and Somalia, with potential long-term implications for Somalia’s economy and resource development.
