The new UNTMIS mission took over UNSOM

The new mission called the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) started working in the country, replacing the former United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Somalia, James Swan, described this new operation as showing how the international community stands by Somalia as a strong government.

“UNTMIS confirms the commitment of the United Nations to support the Government and people of Somalia in building a strong country and a better future – we are proud to work together in this transition operation. the two-year plan, as Somalia continues to strengthen national ownership and self-reliance,” said the Acting Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan.

The new UNTMIS mission was created after the United Nations Security Council approved resolution 2753 (2024) on the 30th of October.
