Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – The Ambassador of the Somalia to Tanzania and Permanent Representative to the East African Community (EAC), Ambassador Ilyaas Ali Hassan, formally handed over the official decision authorizing Somalia to print the EAC passport and adopt its standardized design features.

The decision was presented to the Minister of Internal Security, General Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail “Fartaag,” and the Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency, Mustafa Sheikh Ahmed Dhuxulow.

Implementation from December 2025

The approval follows a bilateral agreement signed between Somalia and Tanzania. Under the decision, Somalia has been authorized to officially begin printing the East African Community passport as of December 2025.

The move marks a significant diplomatic milestone for Somalia, strengthening its integration within the East African Community framework.

Boost to Regional Integration and Mobility

Officials described the development as an important step toward deeper regional cooperation, facilitating easier movement of citizens within EAC member states and enhancing economic and diplomatic ties across East Africa.

Somalia joined the East African Community in 2024, and the adoption of the EAC passport represents further progress in aligning its administrative and travel systems with regional standards.
