Nearly 300 Somali citizens have been repatriated to Somalia after being rescued from irregular migration routes and severe humanitarian abuses in Libya.
The National Commission for Refugees and IDPs (NCRI), in cooperation with the Office of the Presidential Special Envoy for Migration and Children’s Rights, facilitated the return of 275 Somali nationals on Monday.
The returnees—comprising men, women, and children—were living in extremely dangerous conditions and had been exposed to human rights violations during their stay in Libya.
The repatriation effort received strong support from the European Union and the International Organization for Migration (IOM Somalia), both of which played a key role in coordinating and facilitating the travel.
According to officials, the returnees endured abuse, unlawful detention, and harsh living conditions while in Libya.
Upon arrival in Somalia, the citizens were warmly received at the NCRI reception center, where they were provided with comprehensive assistance, including:
-
Medical care
-
Temporary shelter
-
Psychosocial support
-
Food assistance
-
Awareness sessions on the risks of irregular migration
