The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of the Federal Government of Somalia has officially announced the successful completion of the first phase of offshore oil exploration in Somali waters — a major milestone that sets the stage for the development of the country’s natural resources.
According to the official statement released by the Ministry, the exploration was carried out by a team of both Somali and international experts, focusing on geological data collection and subsurface mapping using advanced technologies and modern equipment.
The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Abdirisak Omar Mohamed, stated that the gathered data indicates promising signs of oil reserves in various parts of Somalia’s offshore territory. He emphasized that the exploration process adhered strictly to national laws and international standards, with independent consultants involved to ensure transparency and technical accuracy.
“This is a significant achievement and a step forward that demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to economic growth through the responsible development of our nation’s natural resources,” the Minister noted.
The Ministry also confirmed that the second phase of exploration will commence soon. This next phase will focus on in-depth technical assessments, feasibility studies, and the creation of a regulatory framework to facilitate direct foreign investment.
This offshore oil exploration effort is part of the government’s broader strategy to boost the national economy by tapping into natural wealth, thereby ensuring sustainable revenue to support essential public services and long-term development.
