The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has strongly criticized some opposition politicians who are now opposing the completion of the provisional constitution, despite previously pledging their full support. Speaking at a political event, the President stated that all the candidates who ran against him in the presidential election had publicly promised to finalize the constitution if they came to power.
The President emphasized that video recordings exist showing these candidates making that commitment, adding that it is surprising and disappointing that the very same individuals are now rejecting the constitutional process they once endorsed.
His remarks come amid ongoing national debate about the constitutional review process. Some political parties and opposition figures have expressed concerns over the government’s handling of the process.
President Hassan Sheikh has repeatedly stressed that finalizing the constitution is essential to achieving political stability and building a fully functioning Somali state. He urged all political stakeholders to support the process to ensure the country moves forward with a complete and legitimate constitutional framework.
