Mogadishu, April 20, 2025 – A contingent of 500 Turkish ground troops arrived in Somalia today, transported by two separate military aircraft, according to security sources.

The deployment is part of the ongoing military cooperation between Turkey and Somalia, with the new troops expected to operate in both the Lower and Middle Shabelle regions, as well as other strategically important areas facing security threats.

Senior Somali government officials welcomed the troops at the airport, after which the soldiers were immediately transported to pre-designated military bases.

Turkey already maintains a strong military presence in Somalia, including a major training facility in Mogadishu. The partnership between the two nations has grown to a strategic level, with Turkish forces playing a critical role in training, equipping, and advising Somali security forces.

Although the exact deployment locations have not been officially disclosed, sources indicate that the troops will be positioned to secure areas recently liberated from Al-Shabaab and to reinforce stability in key regions.
