US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to arrive in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday, where talks between the US and Ukraine are expected to begin.
The US Secretary of State’s trip to Saudi Arabia is part of President Donald Trump’s administration’s push to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to the State Department, Rubio underscored President Trump’s determination to end the fighting as soon as possible, stressing that all parties must take steps to ensure a lasting peace. He made the remarks in a phone call with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Friday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also set to travel to Saudi Arabia today, where he will meet with the kingdom’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
When Zelenskyy returns, a diplomatic and military delegation will remain in Saudi Arabia, led by Ukrainian presidential spokesman Andriy Yermak.
The delegation, which will hold talks with a delegation from the US government, also includes Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Chief of the General Staff Pavlo Palisa.
The US delegation is led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and includes National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
The US-Ukraine talks will take place three weeks after senior US officials held talks with top Russian diplomats in Riyadh.
