Top officials of the United Nations in Africa have warned the attack by Rwanda-backed rebels in eastern Congo is a threat to peace in the region as a whole
This statement was made by the officials in an emergency meeting held on Wednesday by members of the United Nations Security Council.
Bintou Keita, the UN Special Envoy for Congo, said, “It is necessary for the Security Council to take immediate and decisive steps to prevent a large-scale war in the Congo.
Huang Xia, the United Nations special envoy for the Great Lakes region of Africa, which includes Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda, also said that the capture of major cities in eastern Congo by the M23 rebels in recent weeks and the statements of key parties show that the threat of conflict in the region is more serious today than before.
Nicolas De Riviere, the French Ambassador to the United Nations also urged the Council to quickly approve a draft resolution that his country circulated two weeks ago, which reaffirms support for Congo’s territorial sovereignty.
