The United States has agreed to resume military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine after talks in which the Ukrainian government agreed to a 30-day ceasefire.
After a meeting in Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US would now forward the request to Russia, and was awaiting Moscow’s response.
Rubio said Washington wants to reach a full agreement with Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is in Saudi Arabia but did not participate in the talks, said the ceasefire was a good proposal and would take effect as soon as Russia agreed.
The US-Ukraine agreement comes after a sensitive meeting at the White House between the US president, who has long been skeptical of aid to Ukraine, and Zelenskiy on February 28, which ended in disagreement.
The European Union has welcomed the ceasefire agreement that Kiev has accepted.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago, and Russia, which has made advances, now controls almost a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.
