The Ugandan government has said that seven soldiers who were part of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) were killed in a three-day battle to drive out Al-Shabaab militants from the Sabiib and Aanoole areas of the Lower Shabelle region a Ugandan defence spokesman confirmed.

“Unfortunately, we lost seven soldiers during the fighting,” said Uganda Defence Forces spokesman Felix Kulayigye, speaking to AFP.

The good news is that the area occupied by Al-Shabaab was re-liberated.

AUSSOM, which replaced the former ATMIS mission, currently has 11,146 troops, although in April it said it needed an additional 8,000 troops to carry out its duties.
