The United States has cut $170 million in aid to Somalia, according to the aid group Stand Up for Aid.

The US decision will exacerbate the impact of drought, conflict, and skyrocketing food prices, which are expected to push 4.4 million people — nearly 23% of the population — into famine by 2025.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said that children under the age of five will be the most severely affected by malnutrition, with up to 1.7 million children predicted to suffer from acute malnutrition by the end of this year.

“No one expected this situation. We had to lay off nearly 150 of our staff due to financial constraints, and we also closed our airport offices, which significantly affected our ability to deliver services,” said Binyam Gebru, Deputy Country Director for Save the Children in Somalia.

Binyam Gebru added that if there are not enough resources to provide their services, many children will die.
