The late General Cali Xaashi Cilmi Barre was one of Somalia’s most historic and decorated military officers. He joined the army at a very young age and was among the Somali soldiers who, under Italian command, invaded Ethiopia between 1935 and 1937.

Career Highlights:

• 1939: Promoted to Spetore Marshal.

• 1940: Became a Lieutenant (Xidigle).

• 1950: Earned his second star.

• 1940–1945: Received military training in Italy.

• 1955–1957: Commander of the Police Force in Lower Jubba.

• 1957–1967: Commander of the Police in Bay and Bakool regions.

• 1960: Joined the Somali National Army after independence.

• 1964: Participated in the Somali-Ethiopian war and was promoted to Colonel.

• 1967: Appointed as the Commander of the Somali Navy. At that time, the navy had only 40 officers, but within five years he built a capable force equipped with patrol boats and two warships.

• 1969: Promoted to Brigadier General of the Somali Navy.

• 1972–1987: Chairman of the Somali Ports Authority. Notable achievements include the establishment of the Somali Naval Academy and the construction of the main Mogadishu port.

• 1987: Retired from public service due to health reasons.

• 1996: Passed away in Nairobi on August 1st.

Land Dispute:

The land once owned by General Cali Xaashi — land steeped in national history and sacrifice — was recently sold by the Somali government to private businessmen. This action has sparked public concern and controversy, raising serious questions about the protection of national heritage and the legacy of those who served Somalia with distinction.
