Mogadishu, March 5, 2025 – The police chief of Banadir region, Macalin Mahdi, and the commander of the Hamar Jajab district station, Rahma, have been accused of illegally demolishing houses where civilians lived, without having any court order to legalize the demolition.
The operation that took place this morning in Fardooley neighborhood of Hamar Jajab district destroyed many houses of poor families, which were not given any notice.
According to local residents, when asked about the court order to carry out the demolition, the commander of Hamar Jajab station, Rahma, replied: “I will demolish on my order!” which shows that there is no law in their practice.
Residents were very angry about these actions, describing them as a show of power and lawlessness. “The government forces and the district administration have made the laws null and void. The way our houses were destroyed is a clear violation of the law,” said one of the people whose houses were destroyed.
Opposition politicians and civil society organizations have condemned these actions, accusing the government of violating people’s rights. “According to the law of the land, a house owned by someone cannot be demolished without a court order. The commanders who carried out the operation should be held accountable immediately,” said a member of the opposition who spoke to RNN Somali TV.
There is still no news from the Federal Government or the Banadir Regional Government regarding the allegations of law-breaking made against the police commanders.
