The Federal Government of Somalia has publicly rejected claims circulating in the media about an alleged secret agreement between Somalia and Sweden that links development aid to the deportation of Somali nationals.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, Somali authorities described the allegations as “false, misleading, and unfounded,” emphasizing that the country has no hidden or conditional arrangements with any partner regarding the return of its citizens or the distribution of development aid.

“There is no secret or conditional arrangement with any partner concerning the return of its nationals or the allocation of development assistance,” the statement read.

The government highlighted its long-standing diplomatic relationship with Sweden, characterizing it as transparent and grounded in mutual respect and adherence to international law. It noted that all bilateral engagements are conducted through official diplomatic channels and are subject to cabinet oversight and institutional accountability.

“All development assistance to Somalia is channelled through transparent mechanisms, including the World Bank, UN agencies, and the central government’s financial system,” the statement added.

The Somali government reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in all foreign aid arrangements, amid growing scrutiny over international migration and development policies in the Horn of Africa.
