Diplomatic sources indicate that tensions are quietly emerging between the governments of Somalia and Egypt due to a stalled military cooperation agreement signed by both countries in August 2024.
According to the information obtained, Egypt has expressed growing concern over a recent political shift observed in Somalia’s leadership, particularly regarding the strengthening ties between Somalia and Ethiopia.
Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud—previously seen as a close ally of Cairo, especially in matters relating to regional threats posed by Ethiopia and the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)—has recently shown signs of moving in a different direction, signaling increased cooperation with Addis Ababa.
Diplomatic observers say Egypt sees this shift as a complete 180-degree turn, potentially undermining the strategic understanding previously shared between the two nations. The military agreement, once hailed as a key security pact, now appears to be on hold, with no tangible progress reported.
Insiders also note that this unexpected development has drawn the attention of regional powers and international stakeholders, who are concerned about its potential impact on the stability of the Horn of Africa and Somalia’s role in regional alliances.
Although neither government has officially confirmed the strain, signs suggest a growing diplomatic rift that may require urgent dialogue and reconciliation to prevent further deterioration of bilateral relations.
