Somalia today celebrates the 65th anniversary of the Northern Regions’ independence from British colonial rule, which occurred on June 26, 1960.
The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who attended the ceremoney gave a speech, mentioning the the heroes of the northern regions who led to liberation and unity, saying that this community played a positive role in realizing that freedom is not just about leaving behind colonialism, but also about ensuring the unity of the Somali nation.
“Unity is not just about the South and the North, the South needs to unite within itself,” said President Hassan Sheikh.
The event, which took place in the capital of Banadir region, was attended by senior government officials, members of both houses of parliament, military officers, civil society organizations, and various segments of the public.
