The Ministry of Fisheries of Somalia issued a serious warning about the dangers posed by rising sea levels, after reports emerged that 9 young people had been swept away by the sea in two days, with 5 of their bodies found while 4 others are still missing.
“We specifically warn all small boats engaged in fishing and other marine activities not to enter the ocean during this period of tension, as the dangers posed by strong waves and extreme weather conditions increase the risk of maritime accidents,” the Ministry said in a statement.
The Ministry also called on the Somali public, especially the youth, to stay away from the country’s beaches and not to engage in swimming or beach recreation during this dangerous period.
Lastly also the Ministry called on security agencies the Banadir regional administration, and the local community to work with emergency services to strengthen preventive measures and awareness-raising related to the seas during the tense period.
