The Director General of Shabelle Media, Abuukar Sheikh Mohamed (Abuukar Iskaay), and his deputy, Mohamud Soofeysane, were recently released after being arrested today at the Xamarweyne Police Station in the Banadir region.
There arrest came after the government was disturbed by an interview Shabelle took from the Chairman of the Somali People’s Party, Abdirahman Suleyman, who was in police custody for a period of time.
Some media advocacy organizations have also described the arrest of the Director General of the Shabelle Network and his deputy as a violation of freedom of expression and the role of independent media for the Somali people.
