Qatar will host an international conference later this month in support of the African Union Somalia Mission (AUSSOM).
The conference will focus on securing additional funding for peacekeepers to continue their peacebuilding and counter-terrorism operations.
The conference is expected to be attended by representatives from the African Union, the United Nations, governments with an interest in Somalia, as well as leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia.
Qatar, which has recently been playing a prominent role in regional affairs, has pledged to play a prominent role in efforts to strengthen security in Somalia.
The US government strongly opposed providing any funding for the AUSSOM mission using the 2719 model, stating that Somalia does not qualify for that model and that other funding methods are needed.
