MP Abdirisak Omar, former Minister of Petroleum, has strongly defended the oil agreement signed between the Federal Government of Somalia and Turkey, responding to criticism from the opposition.
He stated:
“Calling the deal unlawful reflects a lack of understanding of oil and gas contracts. The MoU outlines a 5% royalty and 90% cost recovery, while detailed fiscal terms are found in the PSA (Production Sharing Agreement). A technical paper by a staff engineer is enough for beginners to understand the structure.”
He also shared a link to a technical breakdown of the agreement to further clarify misconceptions.
Meanwhile, Abdirahman Abdishakur, leader of the Wadajir Party, condemned the agreement, calling it:
• Secretive and unconstitutional
• A breach of national resource laws
• A lopsided deal that favors Turkey over Somali interests
In his official statement, Abdishakur claimed the deal:
• Forces Somalia to repurchase its own oil at high international prices
• Excludes Somali businesses and workers
• Fails to include technology transfer or local capacity building
Conclusion:
This disagreement reflects a deeper political divide on the management of Somalia’s natural resources. As debate intensifies, the public and key institutions await further clarification on the deal’s transparency, legality, and national benefits.
