Mogadishu – May 9, 2025
Somalia’s Minister of Women and Human Rights, Hon. Khadiijo Al-Maqsuumi, has officially launched a landmark opportunity for Somali citizens to participate in the establishment and membership of the National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC). The Minister emphasized that this initiative reflects the Federal Government’s strong commitment to protecting and promoting human rights across the nation.
“I am pleased to present this opportunity to become part of the National Human Rights Commission. It is a shared responsibility and privilege to ensure that every citizen feels entitled to their rights and is actively involved in defending and preserving them,” said Minister Khadiijo.
She highlighted that the commission will be established as an empowered, independent, and competent body — in full accordance with national laws and international standards, including the Paris Principles — and will be inclusive of all segments of Somali society.
“This commission will reflect the collective will of the Somali people to have an institution that genuinely works to uphold human rights. I urge the Somali public to take part in the building and operationalization of this commission,” she added.
The Ministry of Women and Human Rights is currently conducting nationwide awareness and consultation campaigns to ensure the selection of commission members who represent the diverse voices of Somali society — including women, youth, persons with disabilities, and all clans and communities.
