The United States Department of Defense said on Monday that it is sending a small number of additional troops to the Middle East, while it is intensifying the conflict in the region.
This decision comes after the Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon killed almost 500 people. The attack was preceded by an exchange of airstrikes on Sunday between the two sides.
Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, did not say the number of troops or what they would do.
The United States already has 40,000 troops in the Middle East.
