The ruling coalition led by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has lost the majority of seats in the lower house of parliament, following an early election that took place in Japan on Sunday.

This is seen as political punishment from the LDP’s voters, who are angered by the massive financial scandals that have recently engulfed the ruling party.
Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party remains the dominant party in Japan’s parliament, and no change is expected in the government he leads. However, Sunday’s results have created political uncertainty.

Because of the votes he lost, Ishiba has to push his political agenda through the parliament, and he may need a political leader.

The ruling coalition had 279 seats before entering the early elections, but after the election, it won 215 seats, as confirmed by the Japanese media this morning.

It is the worst result for this coalition since 2009.
