The IGAD regional organization has officially called for the acceleration of the implementation of the plan set by the African Union and the United Nations for the deployment of Egyptian troops, who will be part of the new AUSSOM (African Union Security Support Mission in Somalia) mission that replaces ATMIS.

A press release issued by IGAD following a meeting held in Kampala, Uganda, noted that Egyptian forces can play an important role in strengthening peace and ensuring security in Somalia.

“The security situation in Somalia requires an urgent response and visible international support. The deployment of Egyptian troops will play a major role in ensuring security and advancing the Somali government’s efforts in security and state-building,” the IGAD statement said.

IGAD particularly stressed the importance of accelerating the AUSSOM mission to combat the threat of Al-Shabaab, and reduce the threat they pose to security in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region as a whole.
