Mogadishu – May 10, 2025 – Torrential rains in Mogadishu have significantly disrupted the operations of government institutions, including the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), according to the Commission’s Chairperson, Mr. Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan.
Chairman Abdikarim expressed concern over the current weather conditions, which have made it difficult for commission members to return home and to coordinate with local officials.
“We cannot go to our homes tonight; heavy rain has fallen, and we cannot reach the regional governor or district commissioner,” he stated, describing the situation as a serious obstacle to the commission’s work.
The rains have caused flooding in several neighborhoods, rendering major roads impassable and hampering movement across the city. This has further complicated logistical coordination between government departments and agencies.
The Electoral Commission had recently begun preparations for upcoming electoral phases, including voter registration and public awareness campaigns.
The Chairman urged the federal and regional authorities to act swiftly to address environmental challenges, particularly concerning infrastructure, to prevent future disruptions to national election activities.
