Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has strongly condemned what he calls President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s attempt to dismantle the National Consultative Forum and transform it into a personal political party, calling it a direct threat to the country’s unity, stability, and state-building efforts.
Farmaajo stated that this move undermines Somalia’s democratic process and opens the door to a one-sided election, led by an illegitimate electoral committee that was neither legally mandated nor formed in accordance with constitutional agreements and previously established protocols.
“I call on President Hassan Sheikh to avoid dragging the country into a political crisis in the limited time left of his term, and to instead focus on national priorities such as combating terrorism, reconciliation with missing federal states, and delivering on his promise to hold a National Consultative Conference,” Farmaajo said.
The former president also directed a message to the leaders of federal member states currently attending meetings at Villa Somalia — including Galmudug, South West, Hirshabelle, SSC-Khaatumo, and the Governor of Banadir — urging them to be cautious and avoid joining a political process or party structure that lacks legal consensus, warning that such a path could lead Somalia into political fragmentation and division.
