Musk’s statement came after people using social media suggested verifying the existence of 4,580 tons of gold said to be stored in Fort Knox.
He replied that this needs to be checked every year.
Musk’s argument drew the attention of politicians, and Senator Rand Paul supported it, saying that Fort Knox should be opened for a real investigation.
Fort Knox is a heavily guarded facility, and it stores some of the United States’ gold treasure. However, there have long been doubts about the existence of the gold, as there has been no official investigation since 1974, which coincided with the collapse of the Bretton Woods agreement.
