The prosecution office of the Congolese military court said on Sunday that 75 soldiers accused of fleeing the war in the eastern regions of the country will be brought to trial on Monday.

The soldiers allegedly withdrew from the front shortly before the M23 rebels took control of several areas in the mineral-rich region of Kivu in eastern Congo.

The 75 soldiers facing trial were arrested after fleeing the front line of the war, after the occupation of Nyabibwe, where they were charged of rape, murder, robbery and sedition, the military prosecutor’s office told Reuters.

The United Nations reported that in the city of Goma, the capital of Kivu, a number of atrocities took place, including mass murder, mass rape, sexual slavery and other violations against humanity, which took place in the Kivu region, especially in Goma.

M23 fighters, Congolese government forces and pro-government militias were all involved in the attacks, according to the United Nations human rights office.
