Members of the Kenyan parliament yesterday approved a motion to impeach the Deputy president of Kenya, after several days of debate.
Rigathi Gachagua, the Deputy president of Kenya appeared in parliament to defend himself against several accusations, including that he supported the anti-government protests in June.
He becomes the first deputy president to be impeached in Kenya’s history.
Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse preferred 11 charges upon which MPs voted to impeach the Deputy President.
The accusations include gross violation of the constitution, undermining the President, undermining devolution, irregular acquisition of wealth, publicly attacking a judge, intimidating acting Kemsa CEO, promoting ethnicity and insubordination to the President among other charges.
A total of 281 MPs voted in favour of the ouster motion against 44 who voted to save his political career .
This motion has now gone to the Senate House of Parliament, where they will discuss this issue and vote on it.
