Tens of thousands of protesters have taken part in demonstrations across Turkey after the country’s main presidential rival, was arrested and charged with corruption.
The country’s worst unrest in more than a decade took place on Sunday, with protesters being hit with tear gas and rubber bullets.
Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, was set to be elected on Sunday as the presidential candidate of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), in the next elections to be held in 2028.
Imamoglu has said the charges against him are politically motivated. “I will never bow down,” he wrote in a post on X before his arrest.
President Erdogan has condemned the protests, accusing the CHP of trying to disturb the peace and divide the people.
Overall, rallies took place in at least 55 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, or more than two-thirds of the country, according to the French news agency AFP.
